‘Little Red Corvette’ has a great story that goes along with it’s writing: apparently Prince fell asleep in the back of Lisa-of-Wendy-And-Lisa’s car, and the song came to him in between his disrupted nap sessions. Everybody else pack up and go home: Prince is writing classic songs in his fucking sleep. I’ve always said there is a fine line between narcoleptic and genius.
Above the slowly building drum machine beat, Prince seems to gather up all the sexuality he had expressed in earlier records to make this as hot as humanly possible. He switches between whispers and an anguished scream, between being the predator and the victim. It was his best song up until that point, and his biggest hit, setting him up nicely for world domination with Purple Rain.
You know how when you get taught something by a professional, they break it down into sections to try and show you how to do it? That’s what the extended remix of ‘Little Red Corvette’ is like, a masterclass in being as amazing as Prince. Everything is prolonged, given more space to breathe, more time to have that effect on you that comes all-too-quickly with the original version. But if you’re listening to the radio edit or the super extendo version, the power of lines like “It was Saturday night, I guess that makes it alright” never gets dull or loses that feeling of pure awesome that Prince seemed to inject into everything he did.
